So far, Solskjaer is doing very well and it is looking a good bet that he will be named the permanent Manchester United manager this summer. Once this is sorted out, whoever is taking charge of recruitment, whether it is Solskjaer or someone else, can sit down and take a look at the club needs.
One of the first signs that Jose Mourinho had a problem with the Manchester United board was when he wanted to sign a centre half, but was told no. Their need for a centre half has not changed, and who ever is in charge of the club will probably see this as their main area to improve this summer.
One player United took a long look at last summer was England centre half Harry Maguire. He would be a perfect fit in the team, being a strong old-fashioned English centre half that the club craves. He is currently at Leicester City, and there is no doubt he would jump at the chance to move to Manchester United, and that transfer would take him to a club playing European football which is something he wants.
If Manchester United want to make a splash this summer, and they want to show they are prepared to back their new manager then Alderweireld is someone they could turn to. They have long since admired the Belgian, and he has proven himself at the top level both domestically and on the European stage with Tottenham.
There are rumours circulating suggesting that Mauricio Pocchetino from Tottenham is on the Manchester United managerial shortlist, and if he moves up north to United then this transfer would certainly become a lot more likely. Pocchetino loves Alderweireld, and the pair have worked together for a very long time, if Pocchetino wants to bring in his own man that he can trust, he is likely to turn to the big Belgian.
Reports in the English media have been strong about Fernandes making a move to the Premier League this summer, with Liverpool the most likely to land his signature. However, over recent weeks it has been mentioned that United have shown an interest in him too.
The 24 year old has scored 22 goals from midfield in Portugal so far this season, and he is exactly the kind of explosive attacking player that thrives in the Premier League. We have seen United go to Portugal for players before with a degree of success and if they are looking to add to their attacking options then Fernandes would certainly be a big positive for them, and even more so if they can take him from under Liverpool’s nose.
